SUMMARY:IEDTA Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:I will be presenting on two topics at the IEDTA conference 2024: \n\n\n‘The Multiple Mind’: Self States\, Structural Dissociation\, and Dissociative Identity Disorder\nAdvancedIntegration with EDTs\n8:30 AM – 12:00 PM\nFairbanks C\nPANEL\n\nDescription \n\nPlease note this presentation spans two sessions (8:30-10am & 10:30am – 12pm)\, with a mid-morning break in between. \nThough the mind’s ‘multiplicity’ has long been acknowledged\, the nature\, extent\, and forms of this multiplicity vary across therapeutic models. ISTDP follows in the Freudian tradition\, considering the mind divided into ego\, id\, and superego\, conscious and unconscious\, based in the dynamics of repression. Other models of mind\, such as the ‘parts’ model of Internal Family Systems\, view the mind as separated into compartments or ‘self-states’ that interact in dynamically relevant self-to-self and selves-to-other relationships. Trauma models have also long recognized the multiplicity of the mind\, as seen in the relationship between traumatic stress and structurally dissociated self-states which well describe the phenomenology of PTSD and DID. In this panel we will present theory and cases related to the dynamics of ego-states or ‘parts’\, structural dissociation of self states in PTSD and DID\, and the relationship between overwhelming experience and peritraumatic dissociation. Recognizing and engaging with endopsychic multiplicity and related frameworks of trauma stress\, persistent dissociative processes\, and deficit-based adaptation has enormous bearing on the therapeutic alliance. We will present a therapist stance that encourages empathic attunement to the multiple mind as an unconscious adaptation. We will prioritize the discovery and knowing of dissociatively held “ways of being” as fundamental to activating and following the UTA. Each presentation will build upon the former\, leading to a period of discussion and consolidation that emphasizes the overlapping phenomenology of multiplicity and dissociation\, and styles of intervention that support integration across different clinical presentations. \n2. ‘Awakening the Heart’ \nAdvanced\n1:30 PM – 3:00 PM\nFairbanks B\n\nDescription \n\nWhen there is a conflict between the heart and the brain\, let the heart be followed\, because the intellect has only one state\, reason and only within reason does the intellect work; it cannot get beyond it. It is the heart that takes one to the highest plane\, which intellect can never reach\, it goes beyond intellect and reaches to what is called inspiration. Intellect can never become inspired; only the heart\, when it is enlightened\, becomes inspired’\, Vivekananda (1893). In this session\, I will speak about my subjective experiences with psychedelics\, which over the last 4 years have dramatically changed my relationship with myself and my therapeutic practice. One way I have been impacted is via deeper access to my somatic countertransference when I sit with clients and adopt a therapeutic stance that is a deeply embodied\, heart-centered\, present-moment experience. This information\, when used with discernment\, can enable the Unconscious Therapeutic Alliance (UTA) to operate with more fluidity between both therapist and client. As the UTA becomes the dominant force in therapy\, the more conscious we can become of our unconscious which frees up more of the energy we call love.

SUMMARY:Embodied ISTDP: Journeys towards healing and wholeness
DESCRIPTION:This training focuses on the learning journey of the therapist\, including how to embody notoriously difficult ISTDP concepts.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIt has been said that to find the path\, one must become the path. Offering effective ISTDP treatment requires us to stretch and increase our own emotional\, psychological\, and energetic capacities\, it may even facilitate higher states of consciousness. It is my experience that to increase our therapeutic effectiveness\, we need to undertake our own inner healing journey\, this in turn enhances our capacity to guide healing in others. This is the story of my journey so far and I hope by telling this story\, you can understand more of your own journey as well as our collective universal journeys towards healing and wholeness. \nDay 1 of this workshop aims to provide a space to consider how ISTDP\, as an effective psychotherapeutic model of change\, can be located within a larger spiritual framework that not only has the power to transform patients but also the person of the therapist. The workshop will explore my hero’s journey within ISTDP and you will be invited to explore yours. Across the 2 days\, we will consider different ways to embody our ISTDP practice to compliment the theoretical and technical aspects of the approach. We will view clinical vignettes that demonstrate key learning phases that many therapists struggle with. We will consider how the ISTDP process can be likened to universal patterns of transformation which include death and rebirth. We will undertake some experiential exercises designed to build awareness of your own unconscious processes that may impact your ISTDP work. \nOn Day 2\, we will have presentations from several experienced ISTDP practitioners who are actively considering spiritual innovations within their ISTDP work.  These experiential presentations will cover the following topics: Melting shame combining ISTDP and music by Liv Raissi; ISTDP and Connection by Dr. Allen Kalpin; and The Sacred Alliance: Psychotherapy\, Spirituality\, and the Western Unconscious by Lawson Sachter (http://psychodynamiczen.org/). \nThe course will cover the following elements: \n-Overview of key ISTDP concepts and key learning phases of the therapist \n-Overview of key spiritual concepts that locate ISTDP within a larger spiritual context \n– Clinical examples of ISTDP in action to highlight elements of the approach that are notoriously difficult to master e.g. working in the transference\, deactivating the transference\, head on collisions\, etc. \n– Breakout rooms to discuss your journey as a therapist \n-Experiential exercises designed to: \n1. Ground participants in the present moment\, \n2. Uncover the unconscious ‘why’ of being a therapist\, \n3. Embody ISTDP skills e.g. mindfulness\, music\, meditation \n13 Continuing Credits are available for this event and can be purchased for an additional $40 here: (Link to be added soon). Participants must have paid tuition fee\, logged in and out each day\, attended the entire webinar\, and completed an evaluation to receive a certificate. Failure to log in or out will result in forfeiture of credit for the entire course. No exceptions will be made. Partial credit is not available. Certificates are available following course completion at www.ceuregistration.com. There is no conflict of interest or commercial support for this program. \nThis training is exclusively for licensed mental health and registered health professionals\, including Psychiatrists\, Psychologists\, Social Workers\, MFTs\, Counselors\, as well as Physicians\, Nurses\, Physical Therapists\, etc. If you are not a mental health or health professional\, you may not attend due to the protection of patient confidentiality. Students and trainees pursuing licensure or registration as a mental health or health professional under supervision are welcome. The course content level is Intermediate level. \nCE Learning Objectives: \n-Identify key ISTDP concepts that learners tend to struggle with \n-Identify personal challenges that impact ISTDP interventions \n-Describe key therapeutic moments showing growth in the therapist’s learning trajectory \n-Compare the process of change in ISTDP with spiritual theories of transformation \n-Apply experiential exercises to ground into the body and heighten awareness of transference processes \n-Recognize emotional blocks to certain interventions and overcome them with skill building exercises. \n-Analyze key ISTDP concepts e.g. the UTA\, transference resistance\, accessing unconscious guilt. \n-Explain how the use of music can melt shame and anxiety states\, which can enhance emotional breakthroughs. \n-Consider the impact of music on the therapist’s own emotional capacity. \n-Evaluate learning edges to define next steps for growth. \n-Identify and experience how mindfulness practice can help therapist and patient better navigate resistance to emotional closeness. \n-Describe how a therapeutic alliance can be sacred. \n-Compare dualistic and non-dualistic approaches to psychotherapy. \nSchedule (in PST\, add 3 hours for EST\, 4 hours for AST): \nDay 1 \n8-9:30 Overview of Key ISTDP learning themes \n9:30-9:45 Break \n9:45-11:15 Overview of Key Spiritual themes \n11:15 – 12:15 Midday Break/Lunch \n12:15 – 13:30 Clinical Vignettes 1 \n13:30 – 13:50 Break \n13:50 – 15:00 Clinical Vignettes 2 \n15:00 Conclude day 1 \nDay 2 \n8-9:30 Melting shame combining ISTDP and music – Liv Raissi \n9:30-9:45 Break \n9:45-11:15 ISTDP and Connection – Dr. Allen Kalpin \n11:15 – 12:15 Midday Break/Lunch \n12:15 – 13:30 The Sacred Alliance: Psychotherapy\, Spirituality\, and the Western Unconscious – Lawson Sachter \n13:30 – 13:50 Break \n13:50 – 15:00 Group discussion\, reflections and next steps \n15:00 Conclude day 2 \nAbout Dr. Cooper: \nDr. Ange Cooper is the inaugural Assistant Dean of Wellness for the Faculty of Medicine and an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University\, Halifax\, Canada. She is also a Registered Psychologist specializing in Intensive Short -Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). She completed 4 years of post-doctoral ISTDP training with Dr. Patricia Coughlin\, 6 years of advanced supervision with Dr. Allan Abbass specializing in functional somatic disorders (FSD) and 4 years of additional training of trainers with Jon Frederickson. \nDr. Cooper worked at the Centre for Emotions and Health and undertook a three-year pilot project to provide consultation\, assessment\, treatment\, teaching and research on using ISTDP to address the unconscious emotional processes underlying (FSD). \nDr. Cooper offers supervision\, teaching and training in ISTDP. She has an ongoing passion for disseminating the ideas and learning from ISTDP in ways that all health professionals can benefit from. Especially\, the building of emotional capacities in health professionals; without which there is greater risk of stress\, burnout\, misalliances and clinical errors. \nDr. Cooper is committed to the dissemination and promotion of ISTDP as an integrated\, open and inclusive model of therapy and is passionate about helping free people from their suffering through the power of their own innate healing mechanisms. SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Practice Training: the Role of Emotions in Somatic Symptoms
DESCRIPTION:**Please note: this works workshop is designed for mental health and other healthcare professionals who are registered with a licensed body/association. \nAlso\, because we will be reviewing videotaped clinical examples\, and due to the confidential nature of material delivered\, a confidentiality waiver must be signed. \nA confidentiality waiver will be sent out to attendees\, by the organizer\, prior to the start of the workshop and must be signed and returned/received by the organizer prior to the start of the workshop. \n  \nBackground: \nWe are very excited to welcome back\, Dr. Ange Cooper who is a Registered Clinical Psychologist and an ISTDP therapist\, teacher\, and trainer\, originally from the UK. She is also the inaugural Assistant Dean of Wellness for the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. She will present on “The Role of Emotions in Functional Somatic Symptoms”. This event is a follow up to her first workshop with us in 2017 at the University of British Columbia\, and in 2016 at the National Family Medicine Conference in Vancouver. \nThe psychological and emotional factors involved in physical health and wellbeing are becoming increasingly important to understand. Research now demonstrates the intimate connection between trauma\, adverse childhood experiences\, how the brain processes strong emotions\, and the impact on the body’s immune\, nervous\, and hormonal systems. \nWhen emotions automatically trigger the fight/flight/freeze response in the body\, persistent physical and emotional symptoms (such as headache\, fatigue\, chronic pain\, gastrointestinal disturbances\, anxiety and depression) can result. Traditional medical investigations are often unable to detect the causes of these somatic symptoms. \nDr. Cooper\, will provide an overview of the assessment and treatment of functional somatic symptoms using an evidence-based psychotherapy approach known as Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). \nIn the News: \nDec 2018 Globe and Mail: Globe and Mail article \nOct 2021 CBC Interview with Dr. Alan Abbass Role of Emotions in Health\, Dalhousie Research CBC interview with Dr. Abbass \n  \nOutline: \nClients/Patients with FSS often present with somatic difficulties for which investigations fail to reveal any pathology. The blockage of healthy emotional processes is thought to result in altered autonomic\, endocrine\, and immune system activity related to the development of these somatic conditions. If the psychological and emotional factors underlying these conditions are not addressed and only standard medical treatment is applied\, it can lead to multiple and unnecessary biological investigations\, medication trials and specialty referrals. \nThis workshop will start with an overview of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy in treating Functional Somatic Symptoms. This will include an understanding of the emotional\, psychological\, and physiological impact of trauma at various stages of the lifespan. You will learn the key meta-psychological principles underpinning the approach as well as how these principles guide treatment interventions. These principles will be demonstrated with video examples as well as experiential exercises to examine the role that emotional factors play. \nFollowing this\, we will review 3 patient cases that demonstrate 3 different FSS alongside treatment approaches that are tailored to get to the emotional root of the presenting problem. These examples will demonstrate the key assessment and treatment phases within the ISTDP approach. \n  \nThis workshop will help build your skills in: \n  \n\nThe assessment of 3 anxiety pathways and how they map onto different physical symptoms\n\n\nThe assessment of 3 systems of resistance that pose barriers to effective treatment\n\n\nApplying tailored interventions based on the client’s/patient’s response to intervention\, including pressure to emotional experiencing\, regulating anxiety states\, and restructuring systems of resistance in order to facilitate deep emotional experiences\n\n\nUnderstanding and making use of transference and counter transference reactions\n\n\nEnhanced awareness of your own unconscious processes in order to increase your therapeutic effectiveness\n\n  \n  \nFacilitator: \nDr. Angela Cooper: \nDr. Cooper is a Registered Clinical Psychologist and an ISTDP therapist\, teacher\, and trainer\, originally from the UK. She is also the inaugural Assistant Dean of Wellness for the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. During her collaboration between the Centre for Emotions and Health\, and Dalhousie’s Department of Family Medicine she enhanced her burgeoning interest in the assessment and treatment of patients with functional somatic symptoms (FSS). Dr. Cooper completed a three-year pilot project to highlight the potential clinical and cost benefits of providing brief talking therapies for FSS in a primary care setting\, resulting in her publication here: Implementing a Psychotherapy Service for Medically Unexplained Symptoms in a Primary Care Setting \nDr. Cooper is incredibly passionate about developing and enhancing the emotional capacities of healthcare professionals. By building clinicians’ emotional resilience\, she hopes to reduce stress\, burnout and medical errors as well as improve the relationship between patient and healthcare provider.
